Street Corner Overture       Rawsthorne

(Soloist      Martin Rummell)

Symphony No 9                Shostakovitch

Following the Concert in April 2005 in which Martin Rummell played  Shostakovitch Cello Concerto No. 1, Janette Ruocco, writing for Brentwood Gazette said of his performance

'Martin Rummell, a superb young German cellist, gave an extremely fine reading of Shostakovitch's Cello Concerto No. 1 Opus 107.  Rummell is a very accomplished soloist with an excellent command of his instrument:  he is also an intelligent soloist whose ego permits him to play just as musically in an accompanying role as he does in the soloist's limelight role.  Despite the considerable rhythmic challenges of this work, conductor Roger Lawrence enticed some of the finest and most expressive playing of the evening from the orchestra that was the musical highlight of the evening.'
